During the period 9. - 23. September the annual exercise DANEX will be executed in Danish and adjacent waters.

DANEX 05 is planned and executed by Danish Task Group (DATG) and includes 56 ship, helicopters and aircraft from 15 nations.

The main objective with DANEX 05 is to exercise and improve the participating forces traditional warfare skills. In addition to this the participants will be exercised in peacekeeping operations such as escorting of merchantmen, non combatant evacuation operations, embargo operations including boarding if necessary.

DANEX 05 is fictitiously built as a scenario divided into four phases.

Phase 1 is a harbour phase 9.-12. September. Due to the large number of participants the ships are alongside in both Copenhagen and Gdynia, Poland. Gdynia will host Standing NATO Response Force Maritime Group 1, previously known as STANAVFORLANT.

Danish, Norwegian, German and Standing NATO Response Force Mine Countermeasures Group 1 can be visited in Copenhagen. The ships, including the new Danish support ship ABSALON, will be open to visitors Saturday and Sunday between 1400 and 1630.

The programme for the ships and crews during the weekend primarily consists of preparatioin to the coming exercise. But in addition to this other arrangements such as sports has been arranged during the weekend. As it is a tradition during a DANEX weekend, ships crews are invited to participate in the morning service in the Naval Church of Copenhagen. This includes marching from the ships to the Holmens Kirke.

Phase 2 is the time for combat enhancement and force integration. Naval disciplines such as gunnery exercise, submarine and mine hunting are trained. The areas around Samsø, Kattegat, Great Belt and around Bornholm will all be full of ships during this phase.

Phase 3 is a transition phase in which the individual ship is preparing for the scenario phase. One half of the ships will begin in Kattegat the other part will begin phase four around Bornholm.

Phase 4 is as previously mentioned based on a fictitious scenario. The ships are divided into two groups, one has been called on by the UN and is representing NATO, the other group is representing Northlandia a regional power with economical interest in the area.
