The driver and a friend were on their way to the harbour to catch fish, when the speeder cable suddenly got stuck. Unable to slow down the scooter drove over the edge and into the muddy waters of Odense harbour. Luckily the driver managed to jump of before going into the water.
The accident occurred while 10 Danish Navy ships were in Odense for a port visit. When they heard what happened, a diver from HDMS LAXEN quickly offered to jump in the water to look for the machine:
- The bottom was covered by a thick layer of mud. There was zero visibility, and I had to feel my way. Actually it was a great exercise in dark water diving, sergeant Jarl Mark explains.
He couldn’t find the scooter in the first dive, but he did find a bike, which was hauled up on the deck.
Sunday sergeant Jarl Mark went to the bottom again, and this time it was a success.
- I placed two buoys on the bottom and stretched a line between them. Dragging the line over the bottom I managed to catch the scooter, says sergeant Jarl Mark
The two wheeled machine has been handed over to its owner.
The episode was covered in the local newspaper Fyens Stiftidende
