Welcome to China Studies at the Royal Danish Defence College
Currently, the international system is undergoing a decisive shift, economically and politically, away from the U.S. and Europe and towards Asia. Above all, this is caused by the formidable economic growth in China over the last 25 years, even though India has also had a decisive impact on the shift.
China is already an economic superpower in some areas, but if one looks at Chinese military capabilities, there is still a long way to go before China becomes a superpower.
The Chinese objectives regarding foreign and security policies in the years to come and how the country’s growing economic and military strength will support these objectives will have a direct impact on a global level.
These questions are being asked with increasing frequency by China’s neighbours, and not least by the only global superpower, the U.S.A.
Even though analyses have been made in Denmark of the direction China is moving in, there is still a wide gap in our knowledge when it comes to the security and defense policy aspects of China’s growing power.
As a result, an analysis to fill this vacuum is needed.
