Investigation into the death of two Danish soldiers in Afghanistan published
The Judge Advocate General’s Corps have published the results of the investigation into the death of two Danish soldiers killed in Afghanistan on September 26th.
Already on the 30th of September Danish Defence recognised the possibility of the soldiers being killed by friendly fire. This has now been confirmed by the report from the Judge Advocate General’s Corps which concludes that the two Danish soldiers were killed by fire by nearby British troops. The report also states that no Danish personnel can be blamed for the accident.
The reason for the friendly fire incident has not yet been fully investigated as the British investigation on the incident is not yet finished.
- It was a terrible accident. For the families of the two soldiers, their comrades and our British colleagues. We must do our best to learn from the accident and minimize the risk of friendly fire incidents. Mikkel Keil Sørensen and Thorbjørn Ole Reese died in action. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, says the Danish Chief of Defence General Jesper Helsø.
Danish Defence wishes to underline that the extremely god relations and cooperation between Danish and British forces will in no way be influenced by the tragic accident.
The families and colleagues of the two killed soldiers have been informed of the result of the investigation.
