The political geography of the region has developed over centuries and today’s borders appear as a product of the original demographic and religious layout in the region.
The cornerstone of the economy and prosperity of the region is the rich oil- and natural gas resources found in the seabed surrounding the Mainlandian island of Bornholm and the nearby island. In addition the rich fishing areas in the waters between Southwestland and northern part of Mainlandia are economically important for the poor state, Mainlandia.
1981.
Following a general election initiated by the UN, riots break out in Mainlandia. For several months, the transitional government tried to establish themselves but resulted in a stalemate. With the declared purpose of establishing law and order, the chief of armed forces, General Mohammed Ali took control of the country.
1982 – 1985 .
Large scale foreign fishing inside Mainlandian territorial waters picks up. The Mainlandian government is unable to protect its rich fishing grounds. MR is suspected of being behind mysterious explosions causing damage to foreign fishing vessels between Southwestland and Mainlandia.
1985 – 2010.
Continued attacks on international interests and UN agencies in Mainland leads to the gradual extraction of UN and NGO’s from the country.
1990.
The flow of arms and funds from Poorland to Mainland reaches an unprecedented level. Although not proven, it is widely assessed that the Mainlandian Radicals are supported from Poorland.
1994.
After the broken relationship with the major regional power, the situation in Poorland quickly deteriorated. The worsened living conditions provide fertile soil for radical groups and terrorist networks.
1995.
The flow of refugees from Mainland to Poorland increases. The pressure increases on the refugee camps established by UN in Poorland,
1996.
Pirate groups starts to operate from the northern part of Mainlandia. Merchant vessels are pirated when they transit the narrow straits between Mainlandia and Poorland/Southwestland and taken to the area off Faxe.
February 2005.
Geologists discover very large oil deposits off the coast of the island of Christiansoe northeast of the Mainlandian island of Bornholm. The discovered oil deposits are just inside the Mainlandian Territorial Water (TTW).
January 2010.
Sporadic unrest initiated by Mainlandian (MR) population in the suburbs of Roenne (55.05N 014.42E), the biggest town on Bornholm, and on Christiansoe.
