Mainlandia is a war torn failed state with little natural resources exempt fisheries, which makes for the bulk of the income for the population in the coastal regions. 

Not recognising the significance of the fundamentalist developments, the previous rule fell in 1981 during a violent revolt against the country’s president. This gave rise to the Council of Truth and Purity which established a fundamentalist rule based on the law of the ancient local animistic scriptures. The violent revolt was orchestrated by the former chief of armed forces, General Mohammed Ali. Small pockets, among these the capital Rushcalda are under control of a transitional government. It is in the capital that a few countries have their diplomatic representations. The rest of the country is ruled by warlords and clans.

Mainlandia has no state controlled or organised military force. A small but corrupted police force exists but it is only operating ashore. Clans and warlords do posses some small militias of which some are exploring operations at sea with small boats.

In the wake of the power vacuum following the 1981 revolt, many fundamentalist fractions of the animistic faith spawned – most with their main focus and hatred centred on the paradigm of the modern world and who are perceived as depraved and in contravention of the true faith.

These fundamentalist fractions were partly Poorland sponsored, turning the masses attention away from internal social inequalities, mismanagement and corruption.

The Mainlandian Radicals (MR) is by far the most militant and dominant movement, and have during recent years displayed an increasingly hostile attitude towards international interests in the area. Terrorist attacks primarily against embassies and international trade interests have occurred frequently.

MR has close ties to terrorist movements in the region and provides weapons, economic support and shelters terrorist training camps in the northern Mainland concentrated in the Northwest Enclave. In an attempt to expand the MR area of influence and control, IED mining has been reported in the waters between Southwestland and Mainlandia.

Widespread smuggling of humans and weapons, is taking place without any interference from local or international authorities. People are being trafficked to Poorland for onward travel to other countries in the region. Fuel and drugs are being smuggled from Poorland with the purpose of further distribution in the region through the porous borders. 

Especially in the northern part of Mainlandia, terrorist fractions, pirate gangs and MR have established a relationship of symbiosis. It is in this region that terrorists are trained and funded by hijacking of merchant vessels.

A more clan based stronghold is the Faxe region (approximately 55.10N 012.10E) . Vessels hijacked in the southern part of the Sound and in the Central Baltic Basin are kept here due to the relatively well functioning infrastructure.
