The Chief of Defence, General Peter Bartram is the Minister of Defence military advisor. He is responsible for the Defence organisation, training and operations.

The Chief of Defence is responsible for approximately 93 percent of the Defence budget. He gives certain directives to the Defence Intelligence Service, the Home Guard and the Defence Construction Service, and will in times of tension and war assume command over the Home Guard.

Defence Command Denmark subordinated authorities are the operational commands, materiel commands, Defence Health Service and the Defence Academy, and some minor joint service institutions.

The oprational commands are responsible for the daily operations in their part of the Defence: Personnel administration, basic training, unit training and exercises.

The materiel commands are responsible for the logistic support and for construction, procurement and maintenance.

The Danish Defence does not have service chiefs. The Chief of Defence is also the Chief of all three services.
